Abiraterone acetate is used in specified prostate-cancer treatment settings. Approved indications vary by jurisdiction.
Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
Current U.S. labeling includes abiraterone acetate with prednisone for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). These cancers have spread beyond the prostate and continue to progress despite androgen-deprivation treatment.
Metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer
Current U.S. labeling also includes abiraterone acetate with prednisone for metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC). The regimen is used with ongoing androgen-deprivation therapy.
European treatment settings
EMA information describes Zytiga with prednisone or prednisolone in specified metastatic prostate-cancer populations, including newly diagnosed high-risk metastatic hormone-sensitive disease and specified disease that has progressed despite androgen-deprivation treatment.
Treatment combinations
Abiraterone is not generally used as an isolated prostate-cancer treatment without consideration of androgen-deprivation and corticosteroid requirements. The appropriate combination depends on the indication and applicable regulatory labeling.
Approved versus investigational use
Clinical research may investigate abiraterone in additional populations or combinations, but research findings do not automatically establish regulatory approval.
Patients should not use abiraterone for an unapproved indication without appropriate specialist evaluation and lawful clinical supervision.
